WHO says in contact with UK officials about new strain of coronavirus

UNITED NATIONS, December 20: The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Saturday that it would release additional information on the new strain of coronavirus discovered in the UK as it becomes available.

“We are in close contact with UK officials regarding the new virus variant # COVID19. They will continue to share information and results from their analysis and ongoing studies. We will update Member States and the public as soon as we learn more about the characteristics of this variant of the virus and its effects, ”WHO said on Twitter.

The organization urged people to follow local coronavirus guidelines and take protective measures.

On Saturday, UK health officials announced that the country had identified a new variant of COVID-19 that is practically unique in the UK and can spread faster than other coronavirus strains.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has introduced new restrictions on coronaviruses, particularly in London and the south-east of England, to prevent the new strain of virus from spreading across the country.

On Friday, Maria Van Kerkhove, the technical director of COVID-19 at WHO, said countries need to take measures to control the spread of COVID-19 at this time, particularly to prevent the virus from spreading following recent discoveries further mutation possibilities has been made by new variants of the disease in Denmark, Great Britain and South Africa.

WHO officials, including Van Kerkhove, said earlier this month that there is currently no evidence that the discovery and spread of new COVID-19 variants would affect the safety or effectiveness of vaccines against the disease. (AGENCIES)
