London, April 22 (IANS) Another 2,396 people in the UK have tested positive for Covid-19, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 4,395,703, according to official figures.
The country also reported an additional 22 coronavirus-related deaths. The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in the UK now stands at 127,327. These numbers, released on Wednesday, only include the deaths of people who died within 28 days of their first positive test, Xinhua News Agency reported.
More than 33.1 million people have received the first coronavirus vaccine, according to the latest official figures.
Earlier Wednesday, a government advisory scientist warned the UK is likely to see a “summer surge” in coronavirus cases as many adults are not vaccinated.
Prof. Adam Finn of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunization (JCVI), an independent expert advisory board that advises UK health departments on vaccination, said the modeling shows that coronavirus cases will increase in the summer if the lockdown is eased.
“The models we saw at JCVI clearly point to a summer spike in cases where lockdown is relaxed as there are still many people in the adult population who have not been vaccinated,” he told the BBC .
Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Tuesday, as the UK continues to make strides in the fight against the coronavirus, “we cannot fool ourselves” that the virus is gone.
He noted that the majority of scientific experts believe that there will be another wave sometime this year and that the British must learn to live with the virus.
However, he said there was nothing in scientific data to suggest the UK should deviate from the lockdown roadmap.
In England, all stores have reopened from April 12th as the lockdown is easing, along with hairdressers, beauty salons and other close liaison services. Restaurants and pubs were allowed to serve food and alcohol to customers who were seated outdoors. Meanwhile, gyms, spas, zoos, theme parks, libraries, and community centers can all open.
On May 17th, restaurants and pubs will be allowed to resume indoor service and repeal most of the rules for outdoor collecting.
