Thailand on Thursday announced its decision to tighten restrictions to curb the spread of Covid-19. New cases have been discovered in more than a third of the country’s provinces.
Thailand will now take different regulatory measures across the country depending on the level of risk and number of cases. The 77 provinces are divided into four categories, namely the heavily controlled, controlled, under and under-monitored and under-monitored, reports the Xinhua News Agency.
Natapanu Nopakun, the deputy spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reported in a daily meeting that the heavily controlled zone, which is characterized by a high rate of infection, with the Samut Sakhon province, which is currently on lockdown, the only one to have a field hospital and checkpoints as well as restrictions on movements and New Years celebrations.
In the controlled zone, where Bangkok is the only one, residents must avoid mass gatherings and New Year celebrations.
Thailand reported 67 new confirmed cases on Thursday, bringing the total to 5,829, with the death toll at 60, according to the Center for Covid-19 Situation Management.
The recent flare-up of infection was first spotted at a fish market in Samut Sakhon province, near the capital, Bangkok, after it was confirmed that a 67-year-old seller was infected.
Cases related to the fish market have been reported in 27 other provinces, including Bangkok, and the number is fluctuating, Natapanu said.
However, he said the Covid-19 situation was still controllable despite the surge in Thailand.
On December 19, Thailand reported 548 new cases, which is the highest daily increase.
