Rumor has it that Apple’s iPad Pro 2021 will have a mini-LED display in 2021. However, this could be a temporary upgrade before the iPad Pro 2022 finally moves to OLED.
We first heard that Apple would switch iPads to mini-LED screens in late 2019, and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently predicted that we would see them as early as 2021. But the new rumor has it that Apple will instead tap Samsung and LG to produce hybrid, according to SamMobile, OLED panels for iPads will be available from 2022.
These hybrid OLED panels are said to be thinner than traditional OLED screens, which Samsung reportedly calls “Ultra Thin” (UT) panels, while LG calls them ATO (Advanced Thin OLED). Samsung is allegedly already preparing to produce this for Apple, a source told SamMobile.
Mini LED … and then OLED?
It’s not too surprising that Apple is switching to OLED displays on its iPads, as Samsung is already using OLED screens for the iPhone 12 series – the first iPhones to move away from the LCD.
For Apple, however, it would be interesting to switch from mini LEDs so quickly. Apple reportedly invested in a new plant in Taiwan to make mini LED displays in mid-2020, and we haven’t seen a product with the new screens.
Instead, Apple may only use OLED screens in its high-end iPads and mini-LEDs in its cheaper tablets (or MicroLED, as SamMobile claims).
