Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 675 SoC back in 2018. It has powered popular devices like the Redmi Note 7 Pro, Vivo U20, and Samsung Galaxy A70s. Today the company announced a successor, the Snapdragon 678 SoC. It focuses on improving photography and connectivity without sacrificing battery life.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 678 is an octa-core CPU based on the 11 nm LLP process. According to the official press release, the SoC brings a tiny increase in performance compared to its predecessor. Accordingly, it has a Kryo 460 CPU that is clocked at 2.2 GHz compared to 2.0 GHz on the Snapdragon 675. However, the GPU on the 678 is the same Adreno 612, but Qualcomm claims to have increased the performance.
For the unware, Kryo is a series of semi-custom ARM cores that Qualcomm uses for its Snapdragon SoCs. Here the Kryo 460 refers to Cortex A76 and Cortex A55 cores. Of these, 2xA76 high-performance cores, as mentioned by Qualcomm, are clocked at 2.2 GHz.
Snapdragon 678 Specifications
For specifications, the SoC supports displays up to FHD + with a maximum resolution of 2520 × 1080 pixels and a color depth of 10 bits. It has a 14-bit Qualcomm Spectra ™ 250L ISP for cameras. This supports a single camera with up to 192 MP and a single / double camera with MFNR up to 25/16 MP. Here, MFNR refers to the reduction of multiple noise.
According to Qualcomm, the Qualcomm® AI engine of the 3rd generation supports camera functions such as portrait mode, low light, laser autofocus, 4K video with 30 frames per second, 5x optical zoom, slow motion (up to 1080p at 120 frames per second ) and more. It also supports HEVC (High-Efficiency Video Coding) and supports Accelerated EIS.
As mentioned above, the Adreno 612 GPU is the same as its predecessor. According to Qualcomm, this SoC is optimized for Unity, Messiah, NeoX and Unreal Engine 4, among others.

Connectivity and other functions
The SD678 also has the same X12 LTE modem. As the name suggests, it doesn’t support 5G. However, it supports maximum download and upload speeds of 600,150 Mbit / s. There is also support for dual SIM VoLTE and 3x20MHz downlink carrier aggregation.
For connectivity we have Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, Beidou, Galileo, GLONASS, GPS, QZSS, SBAS for navigation. For ports you get USB-C with USB 3.1 support.
Further functions are 8 GB DDR4 RAM at 1866 MHz, video playback up to 4 KB with HEVC, AVC codec support, Qualcomm® aptX ™, aptX ™ HD audio, audio playback up to 4 W, Quick Charge ™ 4+ technology and much more.
