Carles Puyol has shared his thoughts on Lionel Messi after the Barcelona captain scored his 644th goal for the club against Real Valladolid.
Messi’s record blow takes him past Pele’s legendary record with Santos and alone as the player with the most goals for a single club.
Puyol believes there is no doubt that Messi will be remembered as the greatest of all time.
“If you ask me who Michael Jordan is, I’ll say he’s the best basketball player in history. I think Messi will have the same status – the best footballer of all time.
“There is also talk of whether Michael Jordan is the best in history and these are opinions and sometimes it is difficult to be objective. It is difficult for a Real Madrid fan to see that Messi is the best.
“We were lucky to have him, but I’m really saying that the feeling is there, that the numbers are there, that they weren’t made up and that they show that he is the best.”

Messi will have the chance to build on his record and score 645 goal against Eibar next week in La Liga. The captain packed four when José Luis Mendilibar’s men last visited Camp Nou.
