OnePlus is working with Google on Smartwatch and Wear OS

A few months ago, OnePlus teased its attempt at creating a smartwatch when it was still a fairly new entity in the smartphone market. While the post pointed to a new OnePlus watch from the company, those claims were soon dismissed. In a new report, the company’s CEO has now made it clear that it is still working on its smartwatch. In addition, the company is working with Google on the Wear OS platform, a point that has nothing to do with the smartwatch. CEO Pete Lau confirmed the above two developments to The Input in an interview, suggesting that a OnePlus watch could be considered for a possible launch in 2021. Lau didn’t reveal a release date or specs for the watch, which in turn suggests a launch that isn’t happening anytime soon. After all, OnePlus is starting to tease and reveal information about its new products almost a month before it actually launches. OnePlus watch with Wear OS?

Before your mind races to places, you should know that Lau made it absolutely clear that the OnePlus Watch and Wear OS projects are completely independent. The company wants the watch to be part of their IoT ecosystem in such a way that it communicates seamlessly with the TV, phone and other smart devices. To do this, the company is working with Google to enable comprehensive integration at the system level. Also Read – OnePlus 7th Anniversary Sale: Discount Deals on OnePlus Phones, TVs, and More

“Wear OS definitely has room for improvement,” said Lau. “We’re trying to work with Google to improve connectivity between the Wear OS ecosystem, Android TV, and Android smartphones, and create that capability for better device interoperability across ecosystems. This was also rated very positively by Google. So this is the direction we’re trying to develop, but we don’t have more than we can currently share about it. “

Lau does not confirm Google’s platform, although he does not deny a possibility. After all, why should a company work on a smartwatch platform and then not use it in one of its products? OnePlus has long relied on Google’s software products and worked on improving the experience. A typical example are the smartphones and smart TVs.

OnePlus’ parent company, Oppo, developed a smartwatch with Wear OS earlier this year, called the Oppo Watch. The Oppo Watch uses the Wear OS platform but adds some ColorOS elements from Oppo to the mix to make the experience different. It is possible for OnePlus to do the same as it borrows heavily from Oppo products. The OnePlus Watch could potentially run on the same Wear OS platform, but it might also bring some Oxygen OS elements with it.

Now all we can do is wait for OnePlus to release an official announcement regarding the OnePlus watch. The cousin Realme is presenting two smartwatches in India this week at different prices: Realme Watch S and Realme Watch S Pro.
