“Man Utd have to sign a middle but they won’t” – Berbatov expects little movement in January

The former Red Devils striker was impressed with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s attacking options but believes they need to be stronger in the back

Manchester United will have to sign a new central defense but are unlikely to do so in January, claims Dimitar Berbatov.

The Red Devils have invested heavily in this area in recent years, doing great deals for the likes of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, and Eric Bailly.

However, it is believed that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still lacking the left-sided option that would provide a better balance for United’s defense.

At the other end of the field, useful pieces of a trophy puzzle are cobbled together.

The Red Devils have shown that as an attack force they can do justice to anyone. Edinson Cavani plays alongside Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood.

Former United striker Berbatov has no firepower concerns, but he would love to see Solskjaer free for defensive reinforcements again – rather than ignoring urgent issues in the middle of a potentially productive 2020-21 campaign.

“Manchester United would probably prefer to stay under the radar a little longer in the Premier League title race,” said Berbatov Betfair.

“Nobody paid much attention to how United kept climbing onto the table so that suddenly they are in third place with a game in hand and playing like title contenders.

“On Sunday, Leeds United gave a lot of space at Old Trafford for Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford to use.

“There are games where everything goes according to your wishes and this was one of them for United. They scored great goals, Scott McTominay was excellent with his two chances in midfield and clinically. In this form United can win the league.

“You should aim to bring the title back to Old Trafford, especially in an unpredictable season where there is so much movement around the top and so tight.

“The transfer window is about to open, but the way Manchester United attacked Leeds and Sheffield United, I wouldn’t say the Red Devils have to bring anyone forward.

“I still think they need a center-back but don’t expect anyone to come next month.”

United have only played three clean sheets in the Premier League this season, with leaks in the back increasing further. However, they have moved to five points ahead of leaders Liverpool and still have a game in hand against the defending champions.
