Football has to restart and accept changes in the Super League, says Real Madrid boss Perez

The Bernabeu boss claims that fans are suffering from the game being played to the point of saturation and that they want to see fewer and higher quality games

Real Madrid President Florentino Perez believes football must embrace the prospect of a European Super League.

Given that many of the continent’s leading divisions are dominated by one or a few teams, there are serious concerns about the long-term viability of domestic football, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic that has hit many sides’ finances.

Perez says a Super League where all the biggest teams in the game would compete against each other is the natural solution and should be seriously considered.

“Nothing will be the same as before. The pandemic obliges us to make football more competitive. We have to be innovative and look for formulas to ensure that football remains attractive, ”he told Real Madrid’s General Assembly.

“Real Madrid were involved in the creation of FIFA and the European Cup, and the current model needs to be restarted, as the effects of Covid-19 have shown. Football needs fresh impetus and Real Madrid will be in the spotlight there. “

Perez wants to see fewer games on the calendar, which should enable higher quality football.

“Everyone is in favor of reforms in world football. There is oversaturation and the fans, who are the most important ones, suffer, ”said Perez. “There are also consequences for injured footballers. Football reform can hardly wait. The biggest clubs in Europe have millions of fans and can’t turn their backs on them. “

Madrid are the most successful team of all time on the European stage, having won the Continental Cup 13 times, including three times under Zidane from 2016 to 2018.

However, they are currently third in La Liga, three points behind leaders Atletico Madrid, despite having played one more game.

Zinedine Zidane’s team will face Eibar on Sunday to fill the gap.

After a slow start to the season, Madrid have won their last three games, including a derby win against Atletico. In the meantime they reached the knockout round of the Champions League on the last day of the game with a 2-0 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach. You will face Atalanta from Serie A in the round of 16.
