Fernando Alonso revealed that the fastest time in the Abu Dhabi postseason test “sparked the competitive spirit.”
The two-time former world champion, who will be 40 years old next July, received special regulations from the FIA for participation in the “Young Driver Test” together with veterans Robert Kubica and Sebastien Buemi.
With a total of 15 cars in Yas Marina, Alonso stood up to some of his rivals a decade ago and the next generation of talent who are hoping to follow in his wheel tracks by conquering the F1 drivers’ title.
And the Spaniard drove this with flying colors when he drove a best lap of 1 minute and 36.333 seconds for Renault in the afternoon. With that he was 0.262 seconds faster than the Formula E team mates Nyck de Vries and Stoffel Vandoorne in the two Mercedes W11s.
“It was good and very nice to be back in the car, especially with the racing team,” said Alonso, who will be back on the grid after two years when Renault is renamed Alpine.
“I tested the car in preparation for 2018, but this felt a bit more serious and kind of sparked the competitive spirit. It was great to feel the modern cars and see what they can do. “

Alonso has increasingly integrated into the Renault team in recent races, including last weekend when he also gave his car, which won the 2005 World Championship, a spin.
“I watched the team’s progress closely over the weekend and it was nice to see what I learned today from outside and then in the cockpit,” he added.
“We de-registered a lot of the basic things that we had prepared in the factory, such as seat attachment, pedal position, etc., which is beneficial for only one and a half days of winter testing next year.
“Today we ticked the box and are going into Christmas and New Year with a good spirit and all motivated people in the team.”
Alonso drove 105 laps of Yas Marina when he drove the Renault 2020 for the second time on the track, having previously done so on a day of shooting in Barcelona.
The other Renault was driven by Formula 2 driver Guanyu Zhou, who drove seven laps less than Alonso after having a spin at Turn 19 that morning that briefly delayed his program.
