In order to promote electronic toll collection, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has issued a notification, under which fastag will be mandatory for all four wheelers from 1 January 2021. In such a situation, Fastag will be mandatory for those older than January 1, which have been sold before December 1, 2017.

Earlier, Nitin Gadkari announced that the government is preparing to take toll with GPS technology. All the vehicles will be equipped with GPS. In this, the money will be cut automatically by tracking the car with GPS. This facility will be ready in the next two years. He said, there are plans to completely eliminate tolls in two years. After this happens, there will be no toll booths on any highway in the next two years. To implement this entire decision, the government has amended the Central Motor Vehicles Act-1989. Fastag was earlier made mandatory for new four-wheelers at the time of registration from December 1, 2017 onwards.
NHAI’s project director NN Giri said that the central government wants to use Fastag 100 percent by 31 December. If the vehicle owner did not put a fastag on their vehicle, they may be inconvenienced on the highway from January 1.
These documents are necessary for fastag
To buy Fastag, you will need a photo copy of the driving license and registration of the vehicle. At the same time, you can use Aadhaar card, passport or PAN card as photo ID.
Fastag will get you for this much money
According to NHAI you can buy Fastag from any bank for 200 rupees. You can recharge Fastag with a minimum of Rs 100. The government has given permission to levy some additional charges on its behalf on recharge from bank and payment wallet.
Where to buy FASTag?
Vehicle owners can purchase FASTags from branches or online services of banks like SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Bank of Baroda, Axis, City Union Bank. Apart from this, FASTag is being issued at all toll plazas of NHAI, PayTM, e-commerce websites like Amazon, and Road Transport Authority (RTA) offices. A ‘My Fastag’ app is also available for customers to purchase tags online.
What is required for application of FASTag?
Among the documents required to apply for FASTag,
- RC copy of vehicle
- Passport size photo of the vehicle owner
- ID proof and address proof are included.
* The FastTag rule is not for two wheelers.
