An army colonel accused of raping his civilian friend’s wife of Russian descent after intoxicating her husband in the officers’ mess in the Cantonment district was arrested Tuesday.
“Col Neeraj Gahlot was arrested while trying to escape to an undisclosed location to avoid arrest,” said Police (East) superintendent Raj Kumar Agarwal.
Police had launched an operation for Col Neeraj Gahlot, whose mobile location was tracked near the officers’ mess on Monday evening, but he had evaded arrest, police Cantonment Circle’s additional superintendent Nikhil Pathak said.
A team led by SHO Ravi Srivastava from the Chakeri Police Station was dispatched to arrest the officer, but his room was found locked from the outside, the ASP said.
The colonel was accused on Sunday of raping his friend’s wife in the officers’ mess, police said.
The woman’s husband, a civilian, filed an FIR against the army officer at the canton’s police station, SP Agarwal had previously said.
According to the complainant, his wife is of Russian descent and has lived in India for 10 years.
The defendant allegedly invited his civilian friend to the officers’ mess and gave him an intoxicating drink that knocked him unconscious, police said, adding that the army officer subsequently raped his friend’s wife.
The defendant is also said to have attacked the woman when she resisted.
After raping the woman, the colonel said goodbye to his superiors and went underground to avoid arrest, an official said.
The rape survivor was later produced in front of a judge who recorded her testimony under Section 164 of the CrPC, Mr Pathak said, adding the testimony had yet to be taken to police.
